Dear brothers and sisters,

Throughout the Jubilee of Hope in 2025, many groups and categories of Catholics went on pilgrimage to Rome. On 5 October 2025, Pope Leo spoke to missionaries from all over the world during Mass. He began his homily with these words:

This is a wonderful opportunity to rekindle in ourselves the awareness of our missionary vocation, which arises from the desire to bring the joy and consolation of the Gospel to everyone, especially those who are experiencing difficult and painful situations.

The missionary vocation is not limited to the women and men who travel to other countries to preach the Gospel and build up the Church. As baptized persons, you and I share in the life and mission of Jesus Christ. Every Christian, every parish community, and every organization or movement of faith is directed and equipped to bring, in words and actions, the message of Jesus to the whole world. In this way, we become pilgrims of hope.

To facilitate and empower this mandate received at Baptism, our Mission Societies were founded a century ago and spread throughout the world. They offer, in a variety of ways, the means to be faithful to this mandate, especially in areas where the Church is new. Over time, they were recognized by the Popes and received the important designation of Pontifical. Our Societies represent a major expression of the Holy Father’s solicitude for the new Churches in missionary territories.

With the promise of my prayers, I join in seeking God’s blessing through our Mother Mary, as expressed by Pope Leo in the concluding words of his homily:

I entrust all of you to the intercession of Mary, the first of her Son’s missionaries, who went in haste to the hill country of Judea, carrying Jesus in her womb and placing herself at the service of Elizabeth. May Mary sustain us, so that each of us can become co-workers for the Kingdom of Christ—the Kingdom of love, justice, and peace.
